Food Prices and Fast Food Alternatives

Have you guys seen the recent prices in food just go sky high? I have been seeing many foods go up atleast a dollar in price! I am not kidding. Even fast food has been going up and I am getting worried. I am right now on a shoe string budget. I have been having to do a lot of extra measures to make sure that I have good yet inexpensive food around, like buying in bulk, planting a garden in pots, looking for sales and I even have had to stop buying fast food altogether. I have stocks of dried beans, rice and I keep extra meat on hand and perserving foods whenever I can. Going green has been easy for me in that respect. My mother has had a hand in teaching me on how to save foods. I even save glass, reuse bags, and ride my bike (it saves money on gas). Things like this have my worried. Have any of your families have had to go with those options?

With food, I do not really like cooking for myself, but I am finding it much cheaper to make my own foods, even my favorite fast foods. I have actually found a way to get fast food somewhat cheaper. I was going through some of my books and I found this interesting book that my mother let me have. It is called 'A Treasury of Top Secret Recipes: The Complete Guide to Re-creating America's Bestselling Brand-name Foods and Restaurant Recipes in Your Own Home' By Todd Wilbur. This book has many of the best foods. Literally everything from KFC's chicken recipe to Snapple drinks, Yoo-hoo drinks, TGI Fridays Turkey Sandwich, BK's Whopper, to making your own Twinkies! I love this book. It has helped me from time to time when I am just hungry for some of this stuff.

Trust me, you're not the only one that's noticed the price of food go up. D: I love fruits and veggies, and seeing those go up is quite discouraging. I've been buying a lot of them frozen rather than fresh since they keep longer and cost less; much like yourself I've been doing a lot of cooking for myself and buying in bulk--I've been more thankful for my Italian genes than I am now, as I can buy loads of pasta and just play around with various recipes on a budget. I try not to go out to eat these days for the reasons you've stated--even when I go to cons, my friends and I bring our own food so we can keep from hitting up a burger joint!

This book you mentioned sounds really interesting--I'd love to be able to make my own Yoo-Hoo drinks!

But yeah; food prices being mad high is not a happy...but it also means you just gotta be clever.

I think I know why about the price hike in food. It is the ethanol thing that is going on. Corn is taking up most of the farming industry right now. If you get a chance look up the Indie film 'King Corn', it is a bit boring, but informational. But it is nuts! I perfer making my own foods.

As far as that book, it is well worth getting. Imagine making your own Cinnabon cinnamon rolls. hehehe, me like those. I have had their rolls. I would like to try the recipe I have.

We're getting this here in the UK too. I believe it's due to the rise in demand for wheat and the typically predictable down in supply becausre wheat fields are being used for biofuels or something. It pushes up all prices for us... At least that's what we were told in geography...

Its takes more than a gallon of gas to make a gallon of ethanol. It is a scam.

I'm broke, i live on pasta too, what i love is the left over veggies in the fridge thrown into a one pot stew with a little meat. Its not much but heck im not starving.

Yep, and on top of that, ethanol can not be piped in like crude oil can. It has to be trucked in, and it degrades faster than crude. It is a bad deal.
